NICETRY Magazine
Visual identity, UI Design

SPLASH!, Germany’s beloved celebrity Hip Hop and RnB magazine rebrands to NICETRY.  I was tasked to create a logo, a revamped website, brand the new set of YouTube channel programs, and a social media campaign to announce the news.

Creative Director: Alexandra Ruppert
Sr. Art Director / Graphic Designer: Toufik Akiki
Agency: Goodlive GmbH

According to the creative brief “NICETRY is silly, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It brings out a playful side of every artist it interviews. It celebrates oddness both in design and content.”
The NICETRY team was looking for a visual identity that screams uniqueness and quirkiness, without relying on any before-seen typefaces or shapes.

Here are a few drafts that did not make the final cut.

Like the name implies, NICETRY is unapologetically sarcastic. While drafting different visual approaches for the logo design, we eventually opted for a wordmark that is giving off ‘meltdown’ and a brandmark of a smiley face that hides tears behind.

Based on Splash! magazine’s audience demographics, we leaned into the late 80’s and 90’s to develop NICETRY’s visual idenity. It gives us room to play around, resonate with our audience, and abuse primary colors, shapes and references.
